Is it all porn or what?

Porn is what is known as a "sex movie". In other words, films in which people are filmed having sex. We do not condemn anyone who watches porn. Porn can be exciting, arousing and interesting. But some people are just curious and want to know what happens there or get to know "how sex works".

We have taken a closer look at the porn industry for you and put together some fun facts for you here.

1. porn, what is it actually?

Porn is what is known as a sex movie, i.e. a movie in which performers are filmed having sex. The difference between a sex scene in a feature film and porn is that genitals are usually shown very close up, whereas sex scenes in a feature film are more superficial. The scenes in a porn movie are therefore very explicit and are shown in great detail.

Porn can not only be videos or films, but can also take place in games and virtual reality or in image form, e.g. in magazines.

Pornography is made to arouse viewers. But it can also be irritating or disturbing to watch certain scenes.

Porn can differ in things like payment, working conditions, casting (i.e. the inclusion of different body shapes and forms, but also skin colors). Because there are considerable differences in the production of porn films, a distinction is often made between mainstream pornography and feminist pornography.

Feminist pornography pays particular attention to ensuring that the working conditions are good and safe for everyone involved and that they are paid fairly. These films therefore cost money. In addition, the directors pay attention to different perspectives - so that the films are not only designed for the "male gaze". Male gaze means that films are aimed at male, heterosexual viewers and therefore disregard all other perspectives.

There is a lot of mainstream pornography available for free on the internet. However, there is little transparency regarding payment and working conditions on set.

It's a bit like Netflix: good movies cost money.

2. is it even legal?

Porn is legal from the age of 18 in Germany and 16 in Switzerland. This means that if you are underage and someone sends you porn, they are liable to prosecution. And if you send one, you are liable to prosecution. The law that regulates this is called "distribution of pornographic content" and ensures that people who give young people access to porn are punished.

What many people don't know: This also applies to nudes, i.e. naked pictures that you have received from (ex-)partners, for example. As soon as you forward them to others, you are committing a criminal offense.

If you are over 18 and want to send someone porn or nudes, make sure you ask first! Nobody wants to receive unsolicited photos of genitals.

3. porn movie = action movie

Porn is a bit like an action movie. There is a script that is acted out by the actors, there are special effects (for example, fake sperm is often used) and there are instructions that the actors are supposed to follow. Much of what happens in porn follows a script and is "rehearsed", so to speak. This means that not everything you see there is exactly what happens during sex at home.

Porn performers are highly trained in what they do and have experience. You don't have to and shouldn't imitate everything you see there at home, because in porn you don't see that many positions and practices require a lot of preparation in order to be able to perform them safely. In particular, practices such as anal sex etc. require preparation and cannot be practiced just like that.

What you don't see in most commercial porn is safe sex. Performers are subject to the rules of regular STI tests, but you hardly ever see lickable tissues or condoms. The same goes for communication, i.e. talking about whether what is being done is okay. In the best case scenario, people who have sex in their private lives should talk about what they like, what they want and what they don't want. This is not the case in porn because it has already been communicated beforehand. That's why you often don't see in the videos whether everyone agrees.

4. everyone in my class watches porn, but I don't want to

Porn can not only be arousing and interesting, but also irritating or disturbing. Just because others watch porn doesn't mean that you should do the same. On the contrary: it's great that you know your limits and listen to what you want and what you don't want. You're not boring or uncool if you don't want to watch porn. If someone sends you an unsolicited video, let them know that you don't want to watch it.

Even if it can be uncomfortable to talk about it, find someone you can confide in. For example, older siblings or a parent.

5. why do they all have such big penises and breasts in porn?

You may have noticed that the genitals are particularly important when selecting porn actors. Most performers have large breasts, large penises, are clean-shaven and do not necessarily portray a diverse image of bodies. In many porn movies, just like in Hollywood films, the cast always looks very similar.

But: people look different, have thick and thin bodies, different skin colors, are shaved or have hair and above all: have very different genitals. Small or slightly larger penises, long testicles, different vulval lips that are either very visible or somewhat hidden.

The genitals of the performers in porn films are real - but they are selected according to a certain pattern, especially when choosing the performers. This is a shame because you don't see a diverse reflection of society, but people who look very similar.

6 I can't think about anything else

If you feel like you can't think about anything else but watching porn, then you should confide in someone. Excessive porn consumption that affects your everyday life can lead to addiction.

Just like with alcohol or drugs, it makes itself felt in such a way that your everyday life is very much determined by thoughts of it, e.g. you are distracted at school/work, think about masturbation and porn and it starts to bother you.

The fact that certain porn no longer excites you at some point and you need "harder" porn to get aroused can also be an indicator.

These are all signs that porn is taking over your life more than it should. You can find help and support from counseling centers such as profamilia or therapists.
