Global vision and facts

Our vision is to improve global health through prevention and education in the field of sexual health. With our approach, we want to support young generations in actively contributing to a healthy sex life.

Our goal: Access to quality education and prevention for all worldwide!

Our organization is committed to addressing the challenges of holistic and unique peer-to-peer communication programs for sexual health, HIV, sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies, and helping people lead healthier and happier lives.

A few figures illustrate the necessity of our work:

  • In 2020, an estimated 38 million people worldwide were living with HIV, with most living in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • South America, Africa and Asia, in particular, are at risk of contracting HIV.
  • In 2020, about 690,000 women worldwide were diagnosed with HIV.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are around 376 million new cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide every year, including chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis.

According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO) from 2019, there were around 121 million unwanted pregnancies per year worldwide. This corresponds to around 40% of all pregnancies.

Facts and figures on sexually transmitted diseases

Chlamydia

  • Chlamydia infections are the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in many countries.
  • Worldwide, around 131 million people are infected with chlamydia.
  • According to the Robert Koch Institute, around 143,000 new infections were reported in Germany in 2019.

Gonorrhea (gonorrhea)

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 87 million people worldwide are infected with gonorrhea.
  • According to the Robert Koch Institute, around 11,000 cases were reported in Germany in 2019, but the number of unreported cases is estimated to be higher.

Syphilis

  • Syphilis infections have increased worldwide in recent years.
  • According to the WHO, in 2016, about 18 million people worldwide were infected with syphilis.
  • According to the Robert Koch Institute, in 2019, there were about 7,800 reported syphilis cases in Germany, most of them in men who have sex with men.

Genital herpes

  • Approximately 417 million people worldwide are infected with the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), which causes genital herpes.
  • In Germany, the prevalence of genital herpes is difficult to estimate because many infections are asymptomatic, but experts assume that the number of unreported cases is high.

HPV (human papillomavirus)

  • Human papillomaviruses are very common, and almost all sexually active people will be infected with them at some point in their lives.
  • Some HPV types can cause cervical cancer and other types of cancer
  • In Germany, HPV vaccination has been recommended for boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14 since 2007 to prevent precancerous lesions and cancer caused by HPV.

HIV/AIDS

  • According to UNAIDS, about 37.7 million people worldwide were infected with HIV in 2020, with about two-thirds of them living in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • In Germany, about 2,700 new HIV infections were reported in 2019, most of them in men who have sex with men.

Hepatitis B and C

  • Hepatitis B and C can be transmitted through sexual contact, but also through contact with blood or from mother to child. According to the WHO, around 257 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis B and around 71 million people with hepatitis C. According to the Robert Koch Institute, there are an estimated 400,000 people in Germany with chronic hepatitis B infection and 200,000 to 500,000 people with chronic hepatitis C infection.

Treatment costs

The costs for the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases can vary depending on the type of disease and the individual treatment.

Here is some information on the estimated average treatment costs for each of the diseases mentioned:

Chlamydia

The cost of antibiotic treatment for chlamydia is usually around 30-50 euros.

Gonorrhea (gonorrhea)

The cost of treatment for an infection with gonorrhea depends on the severity of the disease, but can range from 50 to 150 euros. In severe cases, where intravenous antibiotic therapy is required, the costs may be higher.

Syphilis

The treatment of syphilis can vary depending on the stage of the disease, but can cost up to 500 euros. However, early treatment can reduce the costs.

Genital herpes

The treatment of genital herpes is usually symptomatic and can be treated with antiviral medication. The cost of antiviral therapy is around 50-100 euros.

HPV

The treatment of HPV usually depends on the symptoms. In some cases, surgical removal of the warts may be necessary, which can cost between 100 and 500 euros, depending on the method and number of warts.

HIV/AIDS

The costs for the treatment of HIV/AIDS can be very high and depend on the type of therapy. The cost of antiretroviral drugs can amount to tens of thousands of euros over the course of a patient's life.

Hepatitis B and C

The treatment of hepatitis B and C is often lengthy and can be expensive. The cost of antiviral therapy can amount to several thousand euros, depending on the medication and duration of treatment.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is usually treated with antibiotics and generally costs around 30-50 euros.
