Circumcision

The term circumcision refers to the complete or partial removal of the foreskin of the penis (also known as circumcision). It can be performed for traditional/religious reasons (e.g. by Jews or Muslims), but also for hygienic, aesthetic or medical reasons (e.g. foreskin constriction). Women are also circumcised. The head and foreskin of the outer clitoris and/or parts of the inner and sometimes outer vulval lips are removed. As these procedures can lead to serious health problems and restrict a woman's sense of pleasure, female circumcision is internationally regarded as a measure to suppress female sexuality and is banned in many countries. It is also referred to as female genital mutilation (FGM) or female genital cutting (FGC).
