Heteronormativity

In a heteronormative society, all people are expected to be cisgender and heterosexual. It is assumed that every person is born either male or female and that gender can be determined by genitalia. Furthermore, it is assumed that these two genders are fundamentally different from each other and that they relate to each other sexually and romantically. Society expects women to only be attracted to men and vice versa. Deviations from these expectations, such as queer and polyamorous relationships and trans people, are often made invisible or discriminated against.
