Human papillomavirus (HPV)

HPV stands for human papillomavirus. It is a virus that can be transmitted through sexual contact. There are many different types of HPV, some of which are harmless and cause no symptoms, while others can lead to various health problems. Some types of HPV can lead to growths in the genital area known as genital warts. Other types can lead to cancer of the cervix, anus, penis, mouth and throat. There is a vaccine against HPV that protects teenagers and young adults against some types of HPV that most commonly lead to cancer. It is important to get vaccinated and have regular screenings to reduce the risk of HPV-related health problems.
