Pill

The pill (see contraceptive pill) is a hormonal contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. The hormones taken daily with the pill have the following effects: 1. no ovulation takes place and therefore no egg is available for fertilization, 2. the lining of the uterus is not built up properly and therefore prevents an egg from implanting, and 3. the cervical mucus becomes more viscous, making it more difficult for sperm to ascend into the uterus. Today there are different types of pills (see micropill, minipill), which can be prescribed individually by the gynaecologist. Depending on the type of pill, one pill must be taken daily at a more or less precise time.
