Question submitted for topic Contraception

Why does the three-month injection only work for such a short time?

I use contraception with the three-monthly injection. My question; after 3 injections of FMSE tick vaccine I am immune for 10 years. Why does the three-month contraceptive injection - as the name suggests - ONLY work for three months? Doctor Google doesn't have an answer either, unfortunately. It would be great to be immune for 10 years after one contraceptive injection.

Dear Nora

As the name suggests, the three-month injection is only effective for three months and then needs to be topped up again. This is because the hormone progestin suppresses egg maturation in the ovaries and ovulation. There are long-term contraceptives, such as the IUD or the hormonal coil, which can be used for 3 - 5 years.

So you are not "immune" to pregnancy. It's not a disease that your immune system can fight off...
